Notes:
The VME PowerPIM is the currently offered configuration of the PIM for applications demanding hard real-time control. In this configuration, the development and delivery platforms are on completely separate bus structures. PIM applications run on one, or a combination of multiple VME Power PC 604e boards while the development of applications in Paracell takes place on a Macintosh G3/4 or Intel-based workstation.
The PowerPIM is a scalable solution, ranging from 250 to 8000 processing cells per VME enclosure, depending upon the frame rate required by the application. Additionally, multiple VME PowerPIMs can be networked together via TCP/IP to provide a common distributed solution. For example, in the Japanese Railway PIM application, ten VME enclosures are networked to provide a real-time simulation environment.
The VME PowerPIM features I/O boards that support TCP/IP and DeviceNet™ I/O, making this platform ideal for discrete manufacturing and process control solutions that can benefit from an agent-architecture and guaranteed, predictable performance. In addition, PowerPIM can be configured with Flash Memory so that the state of the application can be stored in a single frame for quick application restarts.
Of course, applications for the PowerPIM are developed using Paracell and the Paracell Navigator environment, thus benefiting from the productivity of the language and the rich tools in the programming environment.
