The PIM is well suited to applications that are on-line, real-time, or heuristic in nature. The architecture makes PIM applications flexible and robust. Changes can be made in one area of the code without effecting other areas. Since it is a real-time, fixed rate platform, the PIM does not introduce any timing artifacts into a simulation or scheduling run.

The PIM features connection to real-time I/O in the industrial market via DeviceNet and can communicate with other computers or controllers via TCP/IP. It is an ideal platform for agent based applications.
